Ernie Martinez (Lakewood, CO), 40-year Swallow Hill faculty member, plays just about every stringed instrument, and more. In high school he started his first bluegrass band, the Off the Wall Gang, and picked up the fiddle, piano, bass, banjo, mandolin and pedal steel guitar within a few years, becoming the go-to utility performer in Colorado, both live and in the studio. Ernie has worked on over 150 records as a producer, songwriter, and arranger, and has released three albums of his original work. As a teacher, Ernie inspires people of all ages, beginners to advanced, learning bluegrass and country.

“Ernie was great to work with and fun to have as a teacher.”

“He was patient, kind, specific and very, very, very good with our group!”

“He is skillful at instantly assessing ability level and making concrete suggestions that students can apply immediately.”

“What a versatile musician. I learned a lot both vocally and on my instrument from Ernie. He had a lot of patience. Thanks to Ernie, I have a new interest in improving my voice and harmonies.”

“An inspiring Wernick instructor. We were fortunate to have a musician with Ernie’s talent as our instructor. He made bluegrass fun and easy. We use the jamming skills he taught us at every jam we attend.”

“Ernie is so laid back and knows so much. His presence is calming and encouraging.”
“Ernie is terrific! He helped us with so much, singing, playing, and pulling together as a band!”
“Extremely talented teacher on the instruments and vocal work. Very devoted, kind, encouraging instructor. Also a very fine and caring individual.”
“I love Ernie. His sense of musicianship is in close competition with his sense of humor. He has the patience and attitude of a great teacher. Is there a better multi-instrumentalist in the Front Range? I doubt it.”
