Fred Staunton picked up the banjo as an adult and started teaching Wernick Method jam classes in 2021. He leads weekly jams and performs with his church bluegrass gospel group at church events and senior living facilities.

George Welling says “I’d been studying banjo about three years when I went to my first jam session and found I couldn’t keep up at all. So, I switched to bass.” Since the 1980s George has jammed and played in bluegrass groups in the DC area. He’s also taught Bluegrass Kids Academy classes at the Gettysburg and Delaware Valley festivals. Moving to Ohio in 2017 he started two weekly bluegrass jams in Columbus, and currently plays bass with Appalachian Swing other central Ohio bands.

“Fred and George were very encouraging throughout the class and made sure everyone was able to contribute at their level. Challenged us to step out of our comfort zone and helped us join in to make real music.”
“Fred and George made a good team. George had a great sense of humor and was an excellent teacher. Fred was warm, welcoming, encouraging — a natural teacher.”
“Fred is an excellent and supportive teacher and he always made the class fun, interesting and informative.”
“A gifted singer, guitarist, and bass player, George creates a hospitable and instructive jam.”
“George’s open and friendly personality, his musicianship, and his organizational skills helped me regain my interest in playing music at jams.”
