Sam Gleaves (Berea, KY) learned old-time music in his first home, Wythe County, VA, and studied bluegrass music in his adopted home of Berea. As a teacher, Sam strives to equip students with confidence and skills to enjoy playing music with others. Since 2012, Sam has taught musicians of all ages at many music camps, festivals, and schools. Sam holds a bachelor’s degree in Folklore from Berea College and a master’s in Music Education from the University of Kentucky. He currently serves as director of the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble and applied music instructor in fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar.

“Sam was by far the best, most patient and knowledgeable teacher I’ve had for any instrument. He’s great at working with complete beginners and experienced players. He really takes the time to gauge what methods are working best for each student. He challenged me to keep trying when I was feeling intimidated.”

“Sam is knowledgeable and encouraging. His class was a real pleasure!”
“He has an encouraging and supportive approach that inspires students to try their best while making them feel they can succeed.”
“Sam is one of the kindest people I know. He taught our bluegrass band how to collaborate and arrange music, always making sure every member had a moment to shine. He continues to inspire me as both a talented musician and a fantastic teacher.”
