Derwin Hinson grew up in North Carolina playing and singing in his family’s gospel band. In his early 20s he joined Charlie Louvin’s band and the next week played his first time on the Grand Ole Opry. For years he worked as a sideman in Nashville and hosted a weekly bluegrass night at the Bell Cove Club, where Bill Monroe was a frequent guest.
A multi-instrumentalist, Derwin has taught lessons since 1977. For years he has toured as the “One-Man Gospel Band”, hosted a weekly bluegrass jam, and makes merry as a premier Santa Claus.
“Derwin Hinson is excellent, jolly, very informative, helpful, never made you feel out of place or less adequate.”
“Derwin is the best I have ever had as a teacher and makes you feel special.”
“Derwin always takes an interest in each student and makes sure his teaching is tailored to each person’s desires and abilities.”
“Derwin is the best! Supportive, encouraging, has great stories. He makes sure EVERYONE in the group (jam and breakout) ‘gets it’ and gives individual help where needed. He made my week!”
“We should be a little intimidated by Derwin’s talent, but he’s so good at sharing and encouraging.”
“I don’t understand how a man with his talent can listen and play with a smile on his face while his students fumble through the chords.”
“So grateful to Derwin and Alene for all they did for us. The camp helped me immensely, and just increased my love for this music and for learning how to jam.”
“This is my first time attending a jam class and I wouldn’t hesitate to attend again with Derwin and Aline leading”
